Getting Around
Summer & Warmer Months:
A personal vehicle is recommended for exploring Woodland Park and the surrounding mountain areas. The neighborhood is enjoyable for short walks, and downtown shops, restaurants, and parks are just minutes away. Highway 24 provides easy access to Colorado Springs and nearby recreation areas, making day trips, hiking, and sightseeing convenient.
Winter Months:
Travel is still very manageable, but guests should be prepared for snow and changing road conditions. Roads are regularly plowed, and Highway 24 is well maintained, though drive times may occasionally be longer during storms. AWD or 4WD vehicles and quality winter tires are strongly recommended. Public transportation in Woodland Park is limited year-round, so having a personal vehicle provides the most flexibility. That said, most guests find winter driving here straightforward with basic preparation and a little extra care.
More Tips on Winter Months:
Winter Road conditions (October-March-ish) *(See Welcome Guide for Website Link)
• Check the road conditions and see HWY cameras up to Woodland Park on CO DOT. *
• The Sun Mountain Chalet is on a fairly steep ‘no outlet’ paved road. It can get slick with heavy snow fall in the winter months. A small all-wheel drive SUV with decent tires (or better- 4x4, Mud/Snow tires) won’t have a problem. A large, rear wheel drive SUV, with nearly bald tires will have the toughest time. Not to worry, if you can’t get up the hill, just park down the road and hike up to the house. Expect the conditions to improve with each pass of the city snowplow/salt truck.
• Cheap tire chains are at Walmart, the good ones are sold at Auto Parts stores and Tractor Supply.
